UNESCO to Hold Sibawayh Congress on 09.12.2010

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization will hold a congress on Iranian linguist Sibawayh on December 9. Themed ‘The Role of Sibawayh and His Linguistic Method in Promoting Proximity of Cultures’, the confab aims to commemorate the 1250th birth anniversary of the linguist. According to ISNA, Mohammad Dabir-Moqaddam, an official with Iran’s Persian Language and Literature Academy, will speak at the event. He will compare Sibawayh’s thoughts with those of modern linguists. Abu Bishr Amr ibn Uthman ibn Qanbar Al-Bishri (Sibawayh) was born in 760 in Fars province. He was one of the earliest and greatest grammarians of Arabic language. His phonetic description of Arabic is one of the most precise ever made, leading some to compare him with Panini. He greatly helped spread the Arabic language in the Middle East. Sibawayh was the first non-Arab to write on Arabic grammar and the first to explain Arabic grammar from a non-Arab perspective. Much of the impetus for this work came from the desire of non-Arab Muslims to understand the holy Qur’an properly.
